How to title your book

A great title is a tiny promise about the book. Use the generator for raw ideas, then sharpen the best one with these rules of thumb:

  • Match the genre. Readers judge the shelf in a split second — a romance title and a horror title should feel different at a glance.
  • Make it easy to say and remember. Short, rhythmic titles travel by word of mouth; tongue-twisters die in the recommendation.
  • Hint at the hook, not the plot. Suggest the mood or the central tension; don’t summarize the story.
  • Check it’s free to use. Titles aren’t copyrighted, but you don’t want to clash with a famous book in your category.
  • Say it out loud and picture it on a cover. If it looks good big and sounds good spoken, you’re close.
